The Lands of Duat (Duat) is a gaming community, born out of our need to expand away from a toxic game. Founded on October 24, 2014, Duat’s core membership has been gaming together for years. Over time, we’ve fine-tuned, retooled, and improved how we as a group operate. Since November 2017, we’ve been much more aggressive in our expansion of Duat, and in our gaming endeavours. This playbook was created to help our current and prospective members understand our philosophies and standard operating procedures, as well as what our plans are currently. Please note that these are expected to change as we move forward, and when that happens, the playbook will be revised and republished to reflect the adjustments.
Duat adopted the motto, “In Service to the Deities, the Pharaohs Game,” informally in January 2018, and formally on 4th April 2018.
The Duat colour scheme is Black and Gold. More appropriately, the gold should look burnished, as if to evoke a balance between the gold in a Pharaohs crown and a darkened, aged papyrus. For a more specific example, review our community flags.
Logo and Flags
Duat has a logo, which is an impossible triangle. The triangle symbolizes the three original core membership ranks: Merchant, Pharaoh, and Deity. The flag is our logo, with Akkadian cuneiform surrounding. The logo can be found at the heading of this playbook. These images are maintained by the Caretaker.
The Duat mentality is that we work together, we collaborate, and we pool our resources (which include people) towards the common goal of dominating whichever games we are playing, and its varied sub goals.
Duat’s ranking structure underwent a truly magnificent change in August 2018. When we refocused our community onto Paradox Games, we underwent a full restructure of how we as a community order ourselves. The Caretaker is still the head of our community. The Council of Deities were rebranded into the Heavenly Council, and the rest of the community follows a ranking hierarchy found in the Crusader Kings game: Baron, Count, Duke, King, and Emperor.
Caretaker of Duat
The Caretaker is the highest authority within the community and is also a member of the Heavenly Council. While the Caretaker has full and unrestricted authority to direct Duat, in practice, the Caretaker consults with and requests the advice of the Heavenly Council. The Caretaker may, at their sole discretion, appoint their replacement from the Council of Deities. This Playbook will always include the Roster of Caretakers.
- First Caretaker of Duat: David Greene, 29 October 2014 to 7 May 2016
- Second Caretaker of Duat: Robert Fenton, 7 May 2016 to 1 September 2016
- Third Caretaker of Duat: Michael Satchell, 1 September 2016 to 4 April 2017
- Fourth Caretaker of Duat: David Greene, 4 April 2017 to present
Note: During our time in the game Politics and War, there were two other individuals who led the alliance. They are not, however, recognized as Caretakers as they were only in charge of that game’s House.
Heavenly Council: Gods (Admins)
The Heavenly Council (formerly known as the Council of Deities) comprise all members of Duat who are ranked God. The Caretaker hand-picks the Gods to serve on the Council, and these individuals are responsible for overseeing the day-to-day interactions. In server terms, these individuals are Admins. There is no explicit process to becoming a God, beyond that they must first be an Emperor. All Gods serve in a largely administrative capacity, sharing many of the same managerial responsibilities as the Caretaker.
Imperial Collective: Emperors (Mods)
The Imperial Collective comprise all members of Duat who are ranked Emperor. The Collective is the senior members of Duat, and these individuals also serve as Moderators within our Discord. Emperors have an outsized role in helping to shape the course of our community, as well as shepherd many of Duat’s projects, programs, and initiatives. Most will not achieve this rank; those who are named Emperor have earned their place by contributing a great deal towards the successes of Duat.
League of Crowns: Kings
The League of Crowns comprise all members of Duat who are ranked King. The League is an upper level of membership: Kings are expected to promote the principles of Duat and be solid players and participants in our games. The Kings are expected to actively encourage participation, and help devise new ways of promoting and growing our community.
Reeds Commune: Dukes
The Reeds Commune comprise all members of Duat who are ranked Duke. The Commune consist of the main body of membership within Duat and are expected to regularly promote Duat to their friends. Dukes are expected to game collaboratively with other members of Duat and exude the Duat Mentality.
Konti Qorti: Counts
The Konti Qorti comprise all members of Duat who are ranked Count. As part of the Qorti, the Counts are expected to game regularly within our community and maintain high levels of activity and participation. Counts who promote Duat and invite individuals who become members of the Grey Fields will be much more likely to be elevated.
Grey Fields: Barons
The Grey Fields comprise all members of Duat who are ranked Baron. The Grey Fields constitute probationary membership. Anyone who plays one of the games we are a part of are enlisted to the Grey Fields, and made Barons.
Tribes of the Nile
The Tribes of the Nile comprise everyone not otherwise ranked who is a part of our Discord server. They have no standing within Duat and are simply visitors and active individuals.
Order of the Feather
Our community recognizes certain individuals as original members of our community. While there is no explicit benefit to being an member of the Order of the Feather, these members have been with us through thick and thin, and are so recognized.
At the time of Edition VI’s publishing date, there are five remaining Original Members of Duat. Should any of the current Original members resign their membership from Duat they forfeit their status as an Original. If they return to Duat, they would no longer be an Original member. These individuals are, in order of Seniority as of the publish date:
- Greene, Caretaker of Duat
- Rob, Emperor of Fent
- Mikey, 3rd Caretaker (Ret.)
- Jayden, the Baron Weiss
- Corpious, the Baron Muse
Duat issues email addresses to all Deities, Team Members, and Project Leads. These email accounts are all from the duatmail.com domain name. Previously, some deities and leads who were issued email accounts were issued them from the domain landsofduat.com. The decision was made to switch away from that and instead have an entirely separate and standalone domain name for email. While some landsofduat.com email addresses do still exist, the recipients can no longer send mail from that address, and can only send from their duatmail.com email address.
For Duat to be registered as a Social Club, we need to be able to maintain an up-to-date membership roll which contains basic information of our membership. This information includes the members’ names, date of birth, some form of contact information (we use email), and location. While addresses aren’t needed, we do need State you’re residing in if you’re in the United States, Territory if you’re in Canada, or the most comparable level for your location. If you’re in the United Kingdom, we’d record your location as County, Nation. An example would be Kent, England.
As far as privacy is concerned, the membership roll will only be visible by the Records Manager for the United States and the Records Manager for the United Kingdom. By keeping the list of people who have access to this short, trusted few, we are better able to safeguard your personal information. This list was previously stored in a Google Spreadsheet (which has since been deleted), however it is now securely stored on our hosted server.
For you to be a Duke, King, or Emperor, we will need all the information. As a Baron or Count, we do not need any of this information, however will require it for you to be eligible for elevation.
Holidays and Anniversaries
Duat has several anniversaries that we celebrate, to varying degrees of pageantry.
- 7 May 2016 is our Day of the Phoenix. On this date, Rob and Mikey reactivated the community that would morph into Duat inside Politics and War. This game is where most of our holidays originate.
- 26 June 2017 is the Day of the Pharaohs. On this date, we adopted the name and culture of Duat. Prior to this, we were using the Clique branding.
- 29 July 2015 is the Clique Day. On this date, we rebranded into the Cobalt Clique, which was the first step in our journey to paradise.
- 26 October 2014 is our anniversary. On this date, the community that would one day be Duat formed.
This document, The Amduat, takes precedence and priority over every other policy and document released, unless that document explicitly states it takes priority over this one. In any situation where there is a conflict, this document will be used as the authority, with the conflict from the other document set aside. In the event that there is a conflict between successive (or previous) editions of The Amduat, the most recent version will take priority, with previous versions still taking priority over any documents issued separately.
Differences between this version and the previous version
Entirely new rank structure. The Council of Deities is now the Heavenly Council. All other ranks do not have equal analogies to previous ranks.
We are no longer actively seeking to build a game, so the expansion plan has been cut.
Seniority is no longer relevant, and has been removed.
We are now focusing solely on Paradox Games, so mention of introducing new games has been stricken.
Implementation and Effectiveness
As the founder and current Caretaker of Duat, I hereby publish this revised document as our playbook. The Amduat, in historical context, was one of the Egyptian funerary texts. In our usage, this document guides our community. The first edition of this document took full effect when published on the 4th of April, in the year 2018. This fourth revision, entitled Edition VI, takes effect on its publishing date of 27th of August 2018, and contains the aforementioned differences. Subsequent versions will also have my signature affixed signifying its adaptation.
